How sharing your story can help others looking for hope

“I just want people to know how much I love this site. It meant so much to me to read the stories!!!!”

“These communities have saved me. Seriously.”

“Hello, I am new here and so happy to know there is somewhere I can go that people will understand…”

These are just a few examples of the kind of messages Inspire receives from our members on a daily basis. Across communities and conditions, people on Inspire are finding hope, inspiration, and information in the stories that you share.

When it comes to our health, stories can be particularly powerful. Personal health stories can teach us about treatments and symptoms and help us feel more connected. In many cases, a person living with a health condition may not know anyone with the same condition. That can leave them feeling isolated and alone. But through the stories shared on Inspire, you can be instantly connected to others who share your experiences. In addition, the option to share anonymously on Inspire may be more comfortable for those who are shy or not yet ready to go public with the personal details of their health.

The benefits of sharing our stories extend to storytellers, as well. Research shows that sharing even brief personal accounts can have positive impacts on psychological and physical health for months after sharing.

If you’ve been wanting to share your story, but haven’t been sure how to start, use these tips to start a discussion in your own Inspire health community. You may be surprised by the lives you impact along the way.

Discussion prompts to help you share your health story

What are/were the symptoms of your condition before you were diagnosed? This information can help others who may be experiencing similar symptoms.

What was your journey to diagnosis? Was it short, or did it take months, or even years? Sharing the details of how you got diagnosed may help others who are still looking for answers. How did you feel throughout your diagnosis journey? Sharing the way your feelings evolved over time can help others who may be going through an emotionally difficult time.

Do you have a health facility, practice, or doctor where you have had a positive experience? Share your treatment journey. Have you tried one or more different treatments for your condition? What has your experience been with each? What have been the side effects or results?

Other health conditions

Do you have other health conditions (also known as comorbidities)? Sharing other conditions that you live with can help others in your community understand their own health journey.

What are your tips for practicing self-love and self-care when living with a health condition? What are the things in life that give you joy?

What has been your personal experience as a caregiver or loved one? What are some of the challenges, and when do you experience good times? What advice would you give to yourself as you started out on your journey as a caregiver or loved one? Inspire communities help thousands of people find support and information about their health. That is all thanks to members like you, who offer their stories to the world. We’re so grateful to you and all that you do for the community. Share your story in an Inspire community today.
